How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal uses a laser or a beam of light to remove your hair. Your hair pigment absorbs the light energy, which then becomes heat. The heat damages the hair follicles to prevent future hair growth. This is a long-lasting hair removal solution, but it is not permanent. It is a form of hair reduction.  You will need several treatments for complete results, as well as maintenance treatments. Laser hair removal can be used in almost any area to eliminate unwanted hair. In many cases, people choose to remove hair on their legs, armpits, bikini and face.

Who Can Get Laser Hair Removal?

Anyone with dark hairs to be removed is a good candidate for laser hair removal. People with a range of skin colors, skin types, and hair types have seen great results with laser hair removal.  However, laser hair removal does not work on light, blond, grey, or red hair.  Electrolysis, which we also do at AVIVA Dermatology, would be a better treatment option if your hair is light in color. Speak with our experienced dermatologist, Dr.Simone Stalling, or her aesthetics team to determine the appropriate hair removal treatment for you.

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?

Although it is recognized as a safe treatment, it does have some potential side effects, such as skin irritation or changes in your skin’s pigment. In some cases, blistering or scarring may occur. If you experience concerning signs following a treatment, be sure to contact our dermatologist near you as soon as possible.

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Before your laser hair removal treatment, we will give you guidelines to prepare for the treatment. It’s recommended that you stay out of the sun before and after laser hair removal. You should also come to the treatment with the area shaved 24 hours prior to the treatment. We may make other recommendations, so be sure to ask how you can prepare prior to your visit.
