What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins or spider veins are commonly seen in both men and women.  Our dermatologist near you has helped many patients with their varicose vein concerns. Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that are a result of damaged blood vessel valves, genetic factors as well as reduced blood flow. When the valves are damaged, blood may flow in the wrong direction or begin to pool, which misshapes the veins, causing them to twist. Varicose veins often affect the legs because walking or standing can put excess pressure on the veins.

How Can a Dermatologist Help with Varicose Veins?

Our dermatologist offers sclerotherapy, which is a treatment used to treat varicose veins. This is a quick and easy procedure that takes about 20 to 30 minutes. You may need one or more sessions depending on the number, location, and size of your veins. Dr. Stalling will inject a solution or foam into the veins. Then, the solution will scar and close the veins. It may feel uncomfortable for a couple of minutes, but you will see results in a couple of weeks. Following the procedure, you will be given guidelines for recovery. You may not be able to exercise for a few days, but you should walk around. You will need to wear compression socks as well. Prior to offering sclerotherapy, Dr. Stalling performs a complete assessment to ensure you are a good candidate for this procedure.  At times, she may suggest less invasive options prior to sclerotherapy.  In certain situations, sclerotherapy may not be recommended.  For example, if you are pregnant, our dermatologist suggests waiting until after your pregnancy to treat your varicose veins with sclerotherapy.
